Position: WordPress Web Developer
Location: Remote (with team in Auckland, NZ)
Team Size: 8
We are Wildlabs, a design and technology studio based in Auckland, New Zealand, with a dynamic team of eight—some based locally and others working remotely.
We’re on the lookout for a passionate WordPress Web Developer with at least 3 years of commercial experience, preferably in a web agency or studio environment.
Our focus is on custom WordPress development, not off-the-shelf site builders like Elementor. We build custom themes using ACF and the Roots.io (composer-based) approach, and many of our projects are centered around WordPress. There is also the opportunity to work on PHP-based projects (e.g., Laravel, Statamic) if you're interested.
What We’re Looking For:
- Expertise in clean, high-quality WordPress development—no plugin-heavy solutions, just solid, efficient code.
- Experience with WooCommerce and related plugins.
- Familiarity with complex WordPress systems and integrations.
- Ability to take over and clean up chaotic WP projects from other agencies (this is rare but occasionally happens).
- A design sensibility, with attention to spacing, typography, and overall aesthetics.
- Proficiency with Vue or React, grounded in a solid understanding of vanilla JS.
- Strong grasp of semantic HTML, accessibility best practices, and cross-browser/device compatibility.
- Mastery of modern CSS, pre-processors, and BEM methodology.
- Understanding of SEO best practices (e.g., Open Graph, JSONLD).
- A passion for writing clean, reusable code and constantly improving.
- Availability to overlap with NZT +12 timezone for at least 2-3 office hours per day.
Bonus Skills (Nice to Have):
- Experience with PHP (advanced level).
- Familiarity with Laravel and/or Statamic.
- Knowledge of animation platforms (GSAP or similar).
- Basic DevOps experience (AWS services).
- A knack for timing, animations, and subtle micro-interactions.
If you don’t meet all of the criteria but have most of them and are eager to learn, please still apply! We value growth and skill development.
What We Offer:
- Interesting, creative, and challenging projects.
- Technical project managers to help guide you.
- Opportunities to experiment with new tech.
Overseas applicants will be considered as full-time contractors under New Zealand law.
To Apply:
Please provide examples of your work and describe your specific contributions. We aim to reply to all applicants but may only contact the most suitable candidates. No recruiters or HR agencies, please.
